The Dance-a-Thon is a fabulous way for our kids to shake it in the gym while raising funds for our school. Every class will take a turn busting moves to playlists by Dovercourt’s Student Council. This is a free activity—there is no cost to participate. That said, we are encouraging Dovercourt students to get involved by:

Our November SAC meeting will take place on Thursday, November 7th, at 6:00pm in the staff room at the school. Childcare will be available. We have a full agenda, which you can see here. We'll be talking about upcoming fundraising priorities, planning upcoming events, talking about enrichment activities, among other matters. We will also have a report from Principal Caitland Ellis, as always. SAC meetings are a great way to find out what's going on with the school, meet other parents and caregivers, and contribute to creating a stronger Dovercourt community. Why not come join us? An update from the Toronto Schools - Caregiver Coalition (TSCC), adapted from an email sent in October: We’re Asking the Minister of Education to #FundEveryPenny Dear parents and families; There are many wonderful things about our school community. Our teachers and staff work tirelessly to ensure a warm and nurturing environment in which our children can learn. Unfortunately, each year they have fewer resources and less support to work with. Since 2018, the amount of per student funding issued by the province has fallen by more than $1,500? Inadequate school funding and a corresponding lack of resources and staff are issues that affect children from families of every political stripe. Furthermore, lack of transparency, accountability, and sufficiency of the provincial funding formula is a problem that was flagged by the Ontario Auditor General in 2017, prior to the current administration. Accordingly, as a matter of non-partisan school advocacy, please consider asking the new Minister of Education Hon. Jill Dunlop to #FundEveryPenny needed to meet student needs. Minister Dunlop can be reached by email at [email protected], and [email protected] and your own Member of Provincial Parliament should also be copied. (Note: Dovercourt PS's MPP is Marit Stiles, and her email address is [email protected].) Or, you can use this form letter: https://win.newmode.net/fundeverypenny. This is the first action in a series of upcoming monthly, province-wide actions coordinated by the Toronto Schools Caregiver Coalition (TSCC), a grassroots organization led by parent volunteers. You can learn more about TSCC here: https://linktr.ee/torontosccoalition. The 8th annual Dovercourt Park Pumpkin Parade is taking place on Friday, November 1st at 6:30pm. Bring your jack-o-lanterns and candles to Dovercourt Park and place them along the park's main pathway. All pumpkins will be gathered and composted at 8:00pm. Psst: If you're to help with the great pumpkin toss at the end of the night, please be at Dovercourt Park by 8:00pm! Questions? Email Sarah Weaver at [email protected]. Join us for the next Dovercourt SAC meeting, which will take place on Thursday, October 17th at 6:00pm in the school's staff room. Childcare will be available. All Dovercourt parents and guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend—even if you've never been involved with SAC, and even if you don't want to volunteer in any formal capacity. You can simply show up to find out more about what's going on in the school. It's a great way to connect with fellow Dovercourt families and support our school. You can see the meeting agenda here. We’ll discuss:
Please come out and see what it's all about. And if you have any questions, of course, please email us at [email protected]. Dovercourt’s pizza lunch program is back for the fall. This program raises money to support all sorts of activities and initiatives at the school—and gives parents and caregivers a welcome break from lunch-packing. Dovercourt SAC supports the pizza lunch program by coordinating volunteers to distribute and serve pizza. We need four parents or guardians for each pizza lunch. Can you volunteer for a shift or two? Details: Dates for Fall 2024:
Time: 11:30am - 12:10pm Location: Meet in the Dovercourt main office to get instructions. Sign up for a shift or two, or email us at [email protected] to see how you can help. Thank you! Dovercourt's Terry Fox Run is taking place at and around the school on Thursday October 3rd. This will mark 20+ years of the school supporting the Terry Fox Foundation in hopes of curing all cancers. Terry persevered because he felt the need to help others. Because of his determination and courage, Terry Fox will always be remembered as a Canadian Hero. Let’s keep his dream alive and continue his Marathon of Hope. Learning about Terry: The Terry Fox Foundation has many age-appropriate resources available to help kids understand Terry's story and the impact of the Terry Fox Run. You can check it out here. Watching the run: The school's assembly and run will take place in the morning. Intermediate students will run at Dovercourt Park. Juniors, Primary and JK/SK will run in the field in the school's west yard. The students will start running around 10:00am. Parents and guardians are welcome to watch, but please stay along the perimeter of the yard, not in it. Donating to the Terry Fox Foundation: The school has created a custom donation link. If you're able, please contribute to this worthy cause using this link. You can also share the link with grandparents, neighbours, friends, and others who might be willing and able to support the school's campaign. Together, we can make a difference. Dovercourt SAC is excited to be holding a gear and book swap during Curriculum Night on October 7th. This is a great opportunity to clear out stuff your kids have outgrown, and/or pick up some gear that fits them now--all at no cost. This year’s swap will include the following clean and gently used donated items:
To donate items: Please look through your closets and shelves and drop your gear and books off before noon on October 7th. You can donate your items in the boxes located at the main school entrance, off Bartlett Ave. Please ensure all items are clean and in good used condition. To take items: Simply come to the main gym at the school during Curriculum Night and, browse what’s available, and take what you like. You do not have to donate items to take items. All Dovercourt families are welcome. Volunteers needed: Can you help us sort gear during the day on October 4th or 7th? Or can you help set up or clean up during the evening of October 7th? Please sign up for a volunteer shift using this form, or email us at and we'll put you to work! We're at [email protected]. Spirit Wear: We will also be selling a selection of new Dovercourt Spirit Wear t-shirts for $20 each at the event, as a fundraiser for SAC initiatives. |
